Alternative Chess : Co-Operative Games

Alternative chess game (played in colour) that uses the same moves as traditional chess but changed from a competitive to a co-operative game.
It encourages team work and creative thinking.
Recently i managed to make those boardgames into a computer game
playable online.

Some interesting aspects about the game

- Could be used to teach children the basics of chess in a fun way.
- Games are played with a co-operative mindset while tournaments can
give them a competetive capacity.
- Can be played online globally in a manner similar to correspondence chess
- While beginners can play an easy introductory game, mental wizards
can make combinations and study end games.

Art projects

Apart from the computer game they are being further developed and can
be played on a variety of boards. Pieces can be made in a cornucopia
of different materials . (wood, glass, fabrics, beads, etc...)
They could even be made in the form of paintings and consequently be
used as art projects.
Art Projects
It is our intention of getting community groups, social entrepreneurs,
artists involved trough art and craft projects.

This is an ongoing and developing project, any enquiries regarding
this project are welcome.

* Visualizing • Children are prompted to imagine a sequence of actions before it happens. We actually strengthen the ability to visualize by training them to shift the pieces in their mind, first one, then several moves ahead.

* Thinking Ahead • Children are taught to think first, then act. We teach them to ask themselves “If I do this, what might happen then, and how can I respond?” Over time, chess helps develop patience and thoughtfulness.

* Weighing Options • Children are taught that they don't have to do the first thing that pops into their mind. They learn to identify alternatives and consider the pros and cons of various actions.

* Analyzing Concretely • Children learn to evaluate the results of specific actions and sequences. Does this sequence help me or hurt me? Decisions are better when guided by logic, rather than impulse.

* Thinking Abstractly • Children are taught to step back periodically from details and consider the bigger picture. They also learn to take patterns used in one context and apply them to different, but related situations.

* Planning • Children are taught to develop longer range goals and take steps toward bringing them about. They are also taught of the need to reevaluate their plans as new developments change the situation.

* Juggling Multiple Considerations Simultaneously - Children are encouraged not to become overly absorbed in any one consideration, but to try to weigh various factors all at once.

None of these skills are specific to chess, but they are all part of the game. The beauty of chess as a teaching tool is that it stimulates children's minds and helps them to build these skills while enjoying themselves. As a result, children become more critical thinkers, better problem solvers, and more independent decision makers.

Educational Research

These conclusions have been backed up by educational research. Studies have been done in various locations around the United States and Canada, showing that chess results in increased scores on standardized tests for both reading and math. A study on a large scale chess program in New York City, which involved more than 100 schools and 3,000 children, showed higher classroom grades in both English and Math for children involved in chess. Studies in Houston, Texas and Bradford, Pennsylvania showed chess leads to higher scores on the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal and the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking.

Social Benefits

In the schools, chess often serves as a bridge, bringing together children of different ages, races and genders in an activity they can all enjoy. Chess helps build individual friendships and also school spirit when children compete together as teams against other schools. I am Painter-photographer) and have been working for some years on a new type of Game (Innovative Co-Operative Approaches)

The Game is based on Chess (in Colour)

This Game i'm proposing in colour has a totaly different approach
(instead of players attacking each other,they need to co-operate to finish a game as quickly as possible)

the game can also be played on different levels and setups

am also hoping of playing those games in some form of tournament in the near future

the idea is also to make the games with
different set-ups (colours or forms)and levels (-easy, intermediate and difficult)
there's a multitude of ways the players and the board could look,making it easier or more difficult to find the opposite player.

some more information-----

the basic difference between this game and normal chess is
that the nature of the game is not one of attacking but of helping eachother
(i'm at present working (writing) on some form of play (story) where "war is over" and the two

clans are invited to a wedding (hence they need to get there as soon as possible)
my initial idea was (still is)to play the game with coloured lights (additive colour)when for

example
(in the theatre)you shine red+blue+green toghether on the stage it will make white. having 2 opposites would make a white light(RIGHT MOVE))
while for example green and red create just another colour (-yellow) so (WRONG MOVE)

the players need to find their opposite colour ( that could be made easy or difficult)+ you can change the whole setup

over the years i have been applying different forms how this game could be played
(example--- the game with the carpets, i made with the help of a whole village in India and works on the same principle- finding their opposite player) same as the other game with the coloured squares .
i also used numbers to make it a bit easier to understand (opposite players need to make nr "7")

the moves used are exactly the same as in chess (horse,bishop,etc...)

i'm updating my site and weblog as i go along.

This is going to be a blog about a new alternative chessgame that's played with colour

Big carpet i made as an artproject (several other ones available) displayed at the festival of worldcultures
(-Dun Loughaire- Ireland - 2004)

They have been made with "New Zealand Pure Virgin Wool" and involved a whole hamlet (village) near the old city of Benares (Varanasi) (India )and a plethora of other people( muslims, hindus and christians) .Considerable time and energy has been spend to realise this venture.

over the years i have been going to india in search of artists and craftpeople.
loads of projects became dead ends, however some projects became very fruitfull and are still ongoing. Sourcing materials could involve several days of busses,trains,jeeps,rickshaws or just plain walking.

it also involved dealing with a total new set of rules regarding how things are done,
(practical matters, business, there's a festival a day in india, marriages, etc...)
unexpected situations are very common if not the thumb of rule, which.. of course... makes everything that little bit more exciting

to be short, i fell in love with the place and the people.
